The struggle is not over! Recent events such as the violence in Charlottesville should be a wakeup call to all Americans. The Ku Klux Klan, White Nationalist and the American Nazi Party among other alt-right groups, emboldened by what they see a tacit approval by the current Administration of their repugnant views and penchant for violence are now openly recruiting others to join their ranks. My father fought in World War II against the evil of the Nazis and I along with my shipmates put our lives on the line to defeat the Soviet threat to the free world. I will not stand idly by and watch this happen in our country. As your representative, I will demand the full force of the law be brought to bear on violent acts perpetrated by these and other hate groups. Free speech must be protected, but the incitement of violence against another is not protected under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Spearheaded by Mike Pence and Jeff Sessions, the Administration has launched an all-out assault on Civil Rights and Voting Rights. African-Americans make up a vastly disproportionate portion of the prison population being far more likely to be incarcerated and receiving longer sentences for the same offense as their white counterparts. The social issues that arise from poverty affect all Americans. Where there is no hope that playing by the rules will lead to economic success, the rules mean little. While dialogue is critical in solving these issues, we must put far more emphasis on investment in economically depressed areas. Government alone cannot solve this problem. A partnership of federal, state and local governments with business, education and community leaders can bring economic prosperity dramatically improving the lives of Americans living in these areas. The opportunity to achieve the American Dream through hard work and God given talent is a Civil Right!
